Part 4

We entered Rome today.

Not all in the crowd were pleased to see their new Emperor - and in his face, I could see Commodus heard the jeers amongst the cheers, as I did.

The crowd would have been even less pleased had they observed his first meeting with the Senate, his altercation with Senator Gracchus...

...or his talk with me afterwards. Commodus does not understand the reality of being Caesar is responsibility, duty. He believes only in his power, and his "vision", not for the betterment of the lives of the people, but so the people will love him.

I know his idea of love - it is twisted.

It was a joy to see Lucius again.

And yet, my joy in him is never free of fear for him. But for the first time, the source of that fear is my own family...

I have seen and heard nothing of Maximus since the night of my father's death. Quintus has become Primus of the Praetoria...

...but I dare not ask him lest he speak with Commodus. I fear the worst, that exiling Maximus would not have satisfied my brother.

I pray to the gods that if he is not spared, that his wife and son may be.
